DNFTA Treasurer Position: Job Posting/ Job Description

Job Purpose

The Treasurer works with the President and the Board of Directors to manage all finance matters, which involves providing strategic direction for financial planning, budget, taxes, cost-benefit analysis, forecasting, and ensuring the financial stability and viability of the organization.


Job Function includes the following Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Communicates financial information to Board of Directors as needed
  • Serves as an information resource to Board and president
  • Analyzes data to make recommendations to improve financial operations
  • Upholds board policies, corporate business objectives, and best practices
  • Prepares reports that are compliant with accounting standards as established by state and federal law
  • Maintains accurate accounts, records, and receipts
  • Endeavors to optimize positive cash flow
  • Manages financial planning for the organization
  • Serves as chief financial officer and custodian of organization’s funds and donations
  • Financial Transparency: all known risks are reflected in the reporting, and highlighted to allow ample time for corrective action
  • Implements financial strategies and time-frames to accomplish organizational objectives
  • Oversees delivery of effective funding for non-profit programs, projects, and activities
  • Makes projections of success and implements risk management strategies
  • Works closely and cooperatively with Board and President in managing projects and implementing enhancements to financial systems
  • Manages annual audit process and works closely with external auditors
  • Maintains a perpetual inventory control system for fixed assets, involving depreciation schedules. Prepares end-of-year inventory report
  • Manages the timely and accurate completion of federal, state & local regulatory reports, including tax filings, consolidated applications, and interim reports
  • Manages relationships with external parties including bank representatives, financial consultants, auditors, and investment advisers
  • Performs periodic, internal reviews of processes to ensure that accounting policies and procedures are being followed in accordance with state and federal law, and that efficiency is achieved wherever possible
  • Works with senior management to develop long-term financial plans and forecasts based on strategic plans and various assumptions
  • Optimizes electronic banking and EFT to reduce transaction costs
  • Ensures timely and accurate processing of vendor invoices and internal reimbursements, ensuring prompt payment and impeccable record-keeping
  • Establishes strong and effective controls, policies, and procedures; develops standards for administering Accounts Payable, and communicates guidelines to promote compliance.
  • Ensures effective accounts receivable processes are in place including the posting, depositing and reconciling of daily receipts

Performs other specific job-related duties. 

  • Manages risk exposure for the company, including evaluating and recommending insurance coverage
  • Prepares grant/foundation applications a plus but not required
  • Implements funded proposals and complies with reporting requirements
  • Articulates clear philosophy and shared vision of learning


Experience, Education, and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Accounting and/or Finance, or related field. A CPA and/or MBA is preferred.
  • 4+ years experience with financial reporting and general ledger activities
  • Strong knowledge of accrual-based accounting
  • Nonprofit tax and accounting experience a plus
  • Highly competent with MS Office Applications: Excel and Word
  • Knowledge of QuickBooks a plus
  • Pro-active, self-starter with strong analytical abilities
  • Have excellent communication skills – written, verbal, presentation and interpersonal
  • Able to multi-task and meet deadlines.
  • Time management and project management experience a must
  • Effective meeting presentation skills: Ability to present complex ideas and financial data succinctly and clearly
